The Passion to Get Ahead
Future-Proof Kentucky is about helping organizations throughout our beautiful home state get ahead of the technology curve. More specifically, it’s our passion to help Kentuckians get ahead of the new Internet economy known as the Internet of Things, or IoT, by embracing the Internet’s next-generation protocol, IPv6.
IoT, briefly explained, is the inter-networking of electronic “smart devices” to include everything from wearable devices, household appliances, medical equipment, smart grids, smart cities, and just about anything else you can think of. We even work with a company that uses small electronic devices to monitor queen bees for honey production. The sky has no limit.
Or does it?
The Internet’s original underlying communication protocol, IPv4, was only designed to handle about 4.3 billion unique IP addresses. IP addresses are like unique home and business addresses. Every device communicating on the Internet needs one.
By 2020, industry experts predict there will be at least 26 billion connected devices, each requiring its own address.
That’s a shortage of over 20 billion addresses!
As you can see, we can’t embrace a new Internet of Things economy if we don’t have available address space.
Luckily, we do have plenty of address space to move into. The next-generation communication protocol for the Internet is called IPv6 and it provides 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 addresses. That’s 340 undecillions for those of you in short scale countries.
This is where Future-Proof Kentucky and LightChange Technologies come in.
